Linguistic analysis of names of herbs in English and Spanish

The subject of this Bachelor's Thesis is a linguistic analysis of the names of herbs in Czech and Spanish. It's focused on the word-forming methods and the motivation of creating these naming units. It provides the reader with a presentation of many common names of several herbs, in which are express various features, using a metaphor. These were also created by using various word-forming methods. This thesis is composed of two main parts. In the theoretical part there is described the process of formation of new naming units and each of the word-forming methods, which both of the languages have. The second and analytical part is focused on the analysis of concrete common names of herbs. The goal of the study is to create a sufficient sample of these names, in order to observe certain tendencies and probabilities in the formation of new names of the herbs and also differences in these processes in both of these languages.

Corpus based description of processes of lexical semantic change in the Early Modern English period

This thesis deals with the processes of lexical semantic change in the Early Modern English period. The theoretical part summarises previous research in the area of lexical semantic change including the basic taxonomies from secondary literature and outlines the linguistic situation in Early Modern English. The aim of the practical part of the thesis is to analyse qualitatively the processes of semantic change in 5 selected words on the basis of examples extracted from the corpora (CED, PCEEC, PPCEME, PPCME2 and EEBO), i.e. to describe circumstances of the changes and factors influencing the individual instances of change. The results of the qualitative analysis are confronted with the theories of semantic change discussed in the first part of the thesis.

Word-Formation Processes in Contemporary English Slang

The presented study focuses on the processes involved in the formation of words in contemporary English slang. The aim of the study is to determine which patterns of word building are the most frequent, also compared to the general word stock of contemporary English, based on the analysis of a representative sample of contemporary slang expressions. In addition, the study attempts to determine if there are any phenomena that have been given little or no attention so far. The study consists of two parts. The theoretical part describes the phenomena that are relevant to the scope of the research and the study in general. The first section of the theoretical part includes a description of slang, also pointing out the differences in the treatment of slang between the English-speaking and Czech linguistic tradition. The second section contains a description of the source of the data used in the research, namely, the open Internet repository of slang expressions Urban Dictionary, which is one of the most widely used slang dictionaries on the Internet. The third section provides an overview of word- formation processes that are productive in contemporary English and relevant to the source material of slang lexemes. Metaphor and Metonymy in the Contemporary Argot of the Parisian Suburbs

The main topic of my dissertation is exploitation of metaphor and metonymy in current argot of Parisian suburbs. The paper defines metaphor, metonymy and synecdoche (special type of metonymy). It also describes the term argot and analyses present argot French on Parisian suburbs from social-linguistic perspective. In the end based on available sources my work analyses lexical units in argot created by means of metaphor and metonymy and describes in detail the process of relevant semantic change.
